Doing The Best We Can With What We Have

Doing The Best We Can With What We Have

Mission Statement

With the expanded use of social media today, it is easy to look at others' lives and wish you were them. There are a handful of fortunate individuals who get to hunt and fish for a living. There are others who's circumstances allow them to spend more time in the outdoors than most. The truth is.. the majority of us are average people. Average men and women who do the best we can with what we have. For us, every hunt is public land. Every hunt is DIY. We will most likely never own a Yeti, our Igloos will have to do. Never look down range through the lens of a Swarovski or wear anything adorned with the Sitka logo. We will never have a hunting magazine, never be the stars of our own hunting show, become prostaff members, or receive free gear. We have a limited number of days off each year, and limited funds to spend. This does not however crush our spirit or curb our enthusiasm for the great outdoors. We will take every opportunity we get to enjoy the Streams, Lakes and Mountains.

We do not criticize those more fortunate than us. Our hope is to appeal to hunters just like us. Those with limited time, limited assets, limited resources, marginal gear, yet, 100% passion.

I had the opportuntiy to visit Henry's Lake with a couple of old soccer buddies.  For those of you who have never heard of Henry's Lake it may be worth the google.  Just a bit of information.  It houses many large cutthroat trout and many hybrid cutbows.  The Idaho Brook trout record was caught in this lake.  (8 lbs.  That is big for a brook trout)  My son, Noah made the trip with me.  This family had been trying to get me up there for the past 5 years.  I am sure glad that I adjusted my schedule for this one.

This was my biggest.  Just under 4 lbs.

The Beaver showed me up!  His was an easy 4 lbs.

Noah showed us both up!  He caught this 2 lb Brookie all by himself!

Noah was getting the hang of yelling "fish on!"  Each time he hooked up, that phrase kept getting louder and louder.  This particular family is somewhat competitive.  Each time a boat came back to the dock there was someone there to ask,  "how many and how big?"  They had a magnetic white board that was updated each evening with your individual total and a group total.  In the whole group there were about 45 people that came and went throughout the course of 10 days.  Noah and I were there for 2 full days and caught almost 100 fish between us!  The running group total for 2012 was an epic 817 fish!!!

I counted this one.

We did head over to one of the many rivers.  With fly rod in tow we were able to get a few small brookies to rise.

Dave fixed this photo up to look like
somthing out of a Norman Rockwell magazine.

If you look closely, I actually hooked the Beaver's hat.
While he was netting my fish the hook popped out right at the boat.
He jammed the net into the water and came up with my fish!

I am grateful for good friends that allow me to continue to enjoy the outdoors and make many unforgettable memories.

  1. Wow that looks like a great time! I really think SLAM outdoors needs to make that trip sometime. Looks pretty cold for May. Is the fishing good year round? Great pics!

  2. Well it's official, Nick can catch fish anywhere. You should be ashamed of yourself for counting that chovie though. I know it has been a long time since I wrote, but I am still a little bitter that I couldn't make the Powell trip. Good to see that SLAM is still alive and well. Can't wait for LOA.
